Dozens of people have died and a rescue
operation was underway to save hundreds more left floating off Egypt’s coast
after a boat carrying migrants trying to reach Europe capsized Wednesday in the Mediterranean Sea.
“An illegal migration boat has
capsized off the coast of Kafr al-Sheikh carrying 600 migrants in the largest
illegal migration operation through the Kafr al-Sheikh coast so far,”
Reuters quoted an Egyptian official as saying on state television.
Security officials told Egyptian media
at least 29 people were dead and 150 had been rescued.
Health Ministry official Alaa Osman from Beheira province said 155 people had been rescued, but that bodies were still being found in the area.
He said the migrants were from several African countries, but Egyptian media cited rescue workers as saying there were also refugees from Syria, and elsewhere in the Middle East.
